Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are not native to New Zealand but have found a welcoming home in its fertile soil. Originating from North America, sunflowers have a history dating back over 3,000 years when they were cultivated by indigenous peoples. Their journey to New Zealand is a testament to the universal appeal of these radiant flowers.
In the language of flowers, sunflowers symbolize adoration, loyalty, and longevity and of course Joy! Helianthus is derived from the Greek Helios, meaning sun, and anthos, meaning flower, and from Latin annuus, meaning annual. The behaviour of sunflowers 'turning their faces towards the sun', a behaviour known as heliotropism, inspired the early botanists when naming this plant.
This natural phenomenon not only inspired the name Sunflowers - but also captures the essence of seeking positivity and brightness in life as we turn our faces towards the Sun. This makes Sunflowers the perfect flower to send for any joyous occasion, their sunny disposition brightens up any celebration or event, and receving a bouquet of Sunflowers guarantees Smiles.
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, sunflowers boast some interesting capabilities. They are known for their ability to absorb heavy metals and toxins from the soil, making them useful in phytoremediation projects (a sustainable environmental cleanup technique that uses plants to remove, stabilize, or degrade pollutants in soil, water, or air). Sunflower oil, extracted from their seeds, is a popular cooking oil with numerous health benefits, while the seeds themselves are a nutritious snack either raw or roasted.
The sight of sunflower fields in full bloom has become a symbol of optimism and resilience in the Kiwi culture. We have some beautiful local Auckland Sunflower Fields to visit during the summer months, some of them are even local to us in West Auckland.

New Zealand is home to various sunflower varieties, each with its unique charm. The classic giant sunflower with its towering height and large blooms is a favorite in gardens across the country. The dwarf sunflower, more suitable for smaller spaces, adds a burst of color to balconies and patios. The versatile range of varieties ensures that sunflowers can be enjoyed by gardeners of all levels.
Whether these stunning yellow flowers are adorning gardens, symbolizing positive sentiments, or contributing to environmental projects, sunflowers have firmly established themselves as a beloved part of New Zealand's floral tapestry. In their golden splendor, sunflowers continue to bring joy and meaning to the landscapes of Aotearoa.
At Auckland Florists Best Blooms, traditionally we get N.Z. grown sunflowers from late January through to April. Fresh from the flower market, and local sunflower growers with outside grown sunflowers. We now have growers cultivating helianthus in greenhouses, allowing the florists of Auckland to enjoy sunflowers starting earlier in December - right through to June and sometimes beyond. (Although note - these are not the giant flower heads of summer sunflowers!)
